Почему проиранские силы прекратили атаки на базы США на Ближнем Востоке [Why pro-Iranian forces stopped attacking US bases in the Middle East]

RBC DAILY

Pro-Iranian groups in Syria and Iraq in February almost completely stopped attacks on US military bases, which previously numbered in the dozens. This is a direct order from Tehran, sources say The New York Times and Reuters

Another reason for the calm may be negotiations on the potential withdrawal of US troops from Syria and Iraq, Lancaster University researcher Guy Burton told RBC. “By not attacking Americans, local militant groups and their Iranian leadership hope to push the United States to speed up the withdrawal process,” he explained. The expert also did not rule out that the United States could threaten Iran that the next retaliatory strikes would be carried out on its own territory.

However, the fact that American bases are not currently under attack does not mean that certain more militant groups in Iraq and Syria are not preparing them, Burton warned. In his opinion, both the ongoing Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and a potential truce in the Gaza Strip, which Hamas could take advantage of to plan new attacks, including, possibly, with the support of Iran, could also lead to destabilization of the situation.

Finally, the growing momentum in the American presidential race will have an increasing influence on the decision-making process in the United States and Middle Eastern countries. “So I think it’s unlikely that the current state of affairs will continue,” Burton concluded.
