THE PALGRAVE GEOPOLITICAL ATLAS: STATE AND QUASI-STATE ACTORS IN GREAT POWER COMPETITION

Abstract:

Qatar represents a unique model for studying the interna-tional relations of small states. Despite its relative small-ness in terms of geographic area and population, Qatar has played an influential role in shaping Middle Eastern pol-itics in recent decades. This chapter sheds light on Qatar’s evolving geopolitical role within the regional and international order, emphasizing how this small state has trans-itioned from relative invisibility to a prominent strategic actor and how it has transcended stereotypical constraints and presented a new model for small-state effectiveness in international relations. The chapter concludes with insights into Qatar’s future trajectory, affirming that small states can be influential players in international relations; however, geopolitics remains a crucial factor in determining the extent of this influence.
